About Payload CMS,
what people ask us.

What is Payload CMS?

It’s an open source headless CMS written in TypeScript that, since version 3, lives inside a Next.js application. Content and admin are defined in code, and you get the admin panel and the API together.

Is Payload suitable for non-technical people?

Yes, that’s the whole point: we build the admin around your content, with labels and descriptions in your language. The people using it see clear fields, not code.

Is Payload free?

Yes, Payload is open source under the MIT licence: there are no licence fees for the CMS. The costs are development and hosting.

What do I need to host a Payload site?

A database and a service to run the Next.js application, plus storage for images. We recommend a setup based on traffic and features, and we can run it for you.

Can I move from WordPress to Payload?

Yes. We model the content in the new admin, import it with a script and set up redirects from the old URLs, so you don’t lose your rankings.

Is a Payload site fast?

With Next.js, pages arrive from the server ready to go and can be cached. This site is built with Payload: you can measure it yourself on PageSpeed.
